Japanese Meditation Garden at Osmosis

The intent of the meditation garden at Osmosis is to enhance the heightened state of sensory awareness and inner peace that naturally follows a rejuvenating spa treatment.

This authentic Kyoto style Japanese garden tells an ancient tale of liberation through a labyrinth of plants, stones and water. Guests may walk, lay, sit or meditate in the garden to invite the garden’s tranquil hypnotic effect. The entire experience creates an ethereal feel that is unmistakably calming. The garden is open to guests of Osmosis on the day of their treatments. Check our website for special Meditation Programs and Garden Tours.

Horticultural Garden Tours with Michael Alliger and Michael Stusser

Monday June 10th, Tuesday June 25th, and Tuesday July 2nd, 10am-11:30am

An hour-long guided tour of the Osmosis meditation garden will be conducted by Osmosis founder Michael Stusser and tree pruning expert Michael Alliger. This garden makes extensive use of stone, water and deer resistant plants to express the tranquil feeling of a Japanese style design. Visitors will be treated to an in-depth look at the underlying Zen themes built into the rock arrangements and pond layout, as well as information about the planting themes and plant materials. The garden has been built over a period of many years and was designed by the preeminent landscape designer, Robert Ketchell, of Brittan. Tea will be served following the tour. Everyone is welcome. The fee is $10

Ox and Ox Herder

The story of the Ox and Ox Herder is a Zen parable of Chinese origin, which has been used in both Chinese and Japanese temples as a means of teaching acolytes about the spiritual path. The story illustrates the various stages of progression toward
a state of enlightenment. A book, which gives a detailed description of the garden, the parable and the plantings, is available in our boutique.

Garden Designer - Robert Ketchell

The Meditation garden was designed and built under the direction of Robert Ketchell, a renowned British horticulturalist whohas studied landscape design extensively in Kyoto Japan. Currently chairman of the Japanese Garden Society (based in the UK) and principle of Sansui Design, he is also an author, lecturer, film maker, and Kyoto garden tourguide. Ketchell and Osmosis founder Michael Stusser (pictured right) met in Kyoto. The two dreamed of working together to create a garden that captured the spirit of the classic gardens of that magical Japanese city. You can learn more and contact Robert at Sansui Design Ltd.
