Western Sonoma County...> provides many opportunities for an unforgettable day trip. Within 35 minutes are some of the finest wineries and most beautiful vineyards found anywhere. Farm Trails will introduce you to the vast bounty of Sonoma, much of which is open to visitors. The area's many annual festivals, beaches, redwood groves, campgrounds, state parks and hiking trails make a visit to Western Sonoma County a memorable journey.
Freestone... is California's first historic district - home to a number of classic western style buildings situated in an exquisitely scenic valley with pastoral vistas and rolling hills. Pomo Indians made their home here for centuries. Many artifacts of aboriginal people are found in mounds. Russians grew wheat in this valley in the early 1800's to support their northern settlements prior to the issuance of Spanish land grants. The town was a center for harvesting and milling redwood and in 1871 became a rail stop on the North Coast Pacific Railroad. Now with a population of 100 or so, Freestone has a special charm all its own with some delightful and very unique attractions:
Wild Flour Bakery , almost across the street from us in Freestone, is one of the best bakeries in Northern California. People travel from all over the Bay Area to sample Jed Wallach's inventive variety of breads, all produced in the wood-fired brick oven Fridays through Mondays - and sold nowhere else!
Freestone Vineyards has a new tasting room at the corner of Bodega and Bohemian Highways, just down the street from Osmosis. Founded by Joseph Phelps Vineyards, this biodynamic vineyard produces excellent pinot noir and chardonnay using natural farming practices and natural remedies such as simple, non-toxic biological sprays. Open Fri-Mon. Freestone Vineyards also has an interesting page on Freestone's history.
The Freestone Country Store is a historic building from 1876 complete with all the character of a country general store. Shelves are stocked with local wines and picnic items. The town's redwood picnic grove is just steps away.
The Green Apple Inn is a five-room country classic bed and breakfast and one of the first in our area. Innkeeper Rosemary Hoffman provides her guests with warm hospitality and bakes fresh breads at each delicious breakfast. A great place to slow down. Walking distance to Osmosis.
Occidental... is just 3.5 miles up the Bohemian Highway from Freestone, part of the Bohemian Connection. This bustling village offers several choices of Italian family-style, Mexican, French and pub cuisines, bed and breakfast inns and unique handicrafts. The Western Hills Nursery, just 1 mile from town on Coleman Valley Road, is a beautiful place to stroll and picnic among the native and drought-resistant plants. Eleven miles west on Coleman Valley Road is the dazzling California coastline and magnificent Pacific Ocean.
Bodega Bay... is a mile or two south from where the Coleman Valley Road meets Coast Highway 1. (Or start from Sebastopol on Hwy 12.) Bodega Bay is home to one of the few commercial fishing fleets on the North Coast. You'll find fresh fish everywhere, from the wharves and chowder shacks to four-star dining options. Go sailing with Captain Rich, golfing on the spectacular new links at Bodega Harbour, or drive out to Bodega Head for a magnificent view of the rugged Sonoma Coastline - and whale-watching December-March!
The Russian River... meanders through the villages of Guerneville, Monte Rio and Duncans Mills, ending at Jenner, the magical place where the river meets the ocean. South on Coast Highway 1 takes you past breathtaking seaside cliffs, with several state beaches to stop and enjoy the views and many trails to explore.
Coming for the wines? Two excellent nearby resources are Sonoma Fine Wines in Occidental and Sophie's Cellars in Monte Rio, both of which specialize in hard-to-find, limited-production wines. Sophie's also features a great selection of local and imported cheeses, chocolates and other picnic goodies.
Here's a charming description of a visit to the Sebastopol area by a bonsai fan. While it has a horticultural slant, she also describes other fun things she enjoyed like excellent sushi, an authentic European bakery, and of course, Osmosis.
Coming By Air? ...For our Southern California friends, Horizon Air (part of Alaskan Air) has direct daily service between LAX and Santa Rosa, as well as Las Vegas, Seattle and Portland. Osmosis is a beautiful half-hour drive from Santa Rosa.
