August Hiking Package Details

POMO RED HILL LOOP - Strenuous hike

Start at the Pomo Canyon Campground in Willow Creek canyon. The Trail winds up and over the rolling coastal hills, skirting the north slope of Red Hill. The trail weaves through lush redwood forests, oak and fir woodlands, open grasslands, and crosses seasonal streams. The path was an ancient trading route of the Pomo and Miwok people. The hike offers panoramic vistas of the lower Russian River, Willow Creek, the town of Jenner, and the serrated coastline.

The views from the summit of Red Hill are some of the best in Sonoma County. Two county high points, Cobb Mountain (Sonoma County) and Mount Saint Helena (Napa County) dot the horizon. The Russian River canyon and estuary are visible to the north, along with the Austin Creek drainage (which contains the excellent Austin Creek State Recreation Area, a 5,000 acre wilderness area). Bodega Head and Point Reyes are visible to the south. The Pacific Ocean stretches out to the western horizon. Few places offer such scenery for so little…and such pleasurable…effort.

DIRECTIONS: The Red Hill Loop hike in Pomo Canyon will start from the Pomo Canyon Campground parking Lot. It is about 9 miles North of Bodega Bay on California Highway 1, then about three miles East on Willow Creek Road. (Willow Creek Road is on the South side of the Russian River, behind the Sizzling Tandor restaurant).

KORTUM TRAIL - Moderate to easy level walk

This out-and-back trip on part of the Kortum Trail parallels the Pacific Ocean on a coastal prairie just west of California Highway One. For most of the way the route is within sight of the crags and cliffs that rise from the water’s edge. This trail is appropriate for beginners, but enjoyable for the more adventurous and can be paced as briskly or leisurely as your group desires. You will venture out almost all the way to Blind Beach, and will be able to catch sight of Goat Rock from the trail, weather permitting. Restrooms are located at the start, middle and end of this lovely hike.

DIRECTIONS: The Kortum Trail hike starts at the Shell Beach parking Lot. It is about 7.5 miles North of Bodega Bay on California Highway 1, on the West sideof the road. You should see the state park sign from your vehicle, if you reach Blind Beach or Goat Rock State Park- you've gone too far!
